The History and Production Process of Barbed Wire

Around the middle pages of the nineteenth century, the migration of agriculture in the United States saw most farmers begin to clear wasteland, moving westward to the plains and southwest frontier, respectively. As agriculture migrated, farmers became more aware of changing environments, which marked a gradual shift from the woodlands of the eastern region to the drier grassland climate of the west. The difference in temperature and geographic location led to very different plants and habits in the two areas. Before the land was cleared, it was rocky and lacked water. When agriculture moved in, the lack of locally adapted agricultural tools and techniques meant that much of the land was unoccupied and unclaimed. In order to adapt to the new planting environment, many farmers started to set up barbed wire fences in their planting areas.

Due to the migration from east to west, to the vast number of people to provide raw materials, by the initial east they have built stone walls, in the process of migration to the west and found many tall trees, wooden fences and from the raw materials in this area gradually expanded to the south, at that time cheap labor and let the construction become very easy, but in the westernmost part due to the stone and the trees are not so abundant, the fence is not so widely set up. But in the far west, where stone and trees were not as plentiful, fencing was not as widely practiced.

In the early days of land reclamation, due to the lack of materials, people’s traditional concept of fences can play a protective role in their own borders from other external forces to destroy and trampled by animals, so the sense of protection is very strong.

Due to the lack of wood and stone, people began to look for alternatives to fences to protect their crops. In the early 1860′s and 1870′s, people began to cultivate plants with thorns for fencing, but with little success due to the scarcity of the plants, their high price, and the inconvenience of constructing the fences, they were abandoned. The lack of fencing made the process of clearing the land less successful. It wasn’t until 1873 that a new study changed their predicament when DeKalb, Illinois, invented the use of barbed wire to maintain their land. From this point on, barbed wire has just entered the history of the industry.

 Production process and technology.

In China, most of the factories that produce barbed wire use galvanized wire or plastic coated wire directly into barbed wire. This method of braiding and twisting the barbed wire increases the production efficiency, but sometimes it has the disadvantage that the barbed wire is not fixed enough. With the development of technology, now there are some manufacturers began to use the addition of some crimping process, so that the wire surface is not completely rounded, which greatly improves the stabilization of the barbed wire.
